In a bold declaration on Monday, the former President announced that, should he secure victory in the upcoming November elections, his initial measures would include the liberation of individuals incarcerated for their involvement in the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.
“Upon reclaiming the presidency, my immediate priorities will be to secure our borders, embrace energy independence through drilling, and release the unjustly detained January 6 individuals,” he stated on Truth Social.
The former President has consistently voiced his support for those facing charges related to the January 6 upheaval. This event saw his advocates forcefully confront law enforcement and breach the Capitol in a failed attempt to obstruct the certification of President Biden’s 2020 electoral triumph.
He has previously indicated a willingness to pardon some individuals implicated in the Capitol siege and last year, he was a keynote speaker at a fundraising event aimed at supporting the defendants of January 6.
Currently, the former President is contending with federal charges in Washington, D.C., related to his endeavors to cling to power post the 2020 election defeat. Additionally, he faces legal challenges in Georgia concerning his attempts to contest the state’s 2020 election outcomes.
As of January 6, 2024, the Justice Department has charged over 1,200 individuals in relation to the Capitol assault. Among these, more than 450 face charges for assaulting, resisting, or obstructing officers or employees.
Furthermore, the Justice Department reports that over 700 people have admitted guilt to a variety of federal offenses.
With the Republican presidential nomination within his grasp, the former President is poised for a potential electoral rematch with President Biden this November.
