OpenAI Criticizes Elon Musk’s Lawsuit as ‘Incoherent’

In a recent legal development, OpenAI has confidently stated that its success trajectory has remained strong and upward since Elon Musk’s departure in 2018. The company is now in a legal tussle with Musk, who is attempting to claim credit for OpenAI’s significant achievements over the past six years.

Responding to Musk’s lawsuit filed last month, OpenAI has dismissed his allegations as baseless and fictional. The company described Musk’s claims as “incoherent,” “frivolous,” and “extraordinary,” underscoring the lawsuit’s lack of substance.

Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, alleges that the company has strayed from its original, nonprofit mission. He accuses OpenAI of limiting access to its most advanced artificial intelligence technologies to exclusive, private customers, thereby breaching the company’s founding principles.

In a bold move, OpenAI refuted Musk’s accusations in a blog post, suggesting that Musk’s grievances stem from envy and his absence from the company’s current success in the competitive AI landscape. The post highlighted Musk’s previous communications with OpenAI co-founders, including a 2018 email in which Musk proposed selling OpenAI to Tesla to maintain competitiveness—a suggestion that was ultimately rejected, leading to Musk’s exit from the company.

Further intensifying the legal battle, OpenAI’s recent court filing accuses Musk of fabricating the existence of a founding agreement to launch a lawsuit that serves his commercial interests. OpenAI asserts that no such agreement or any funding-related agreement with Musk was ever in place.

The filing reveals that evidence would likely demonstrate Musk’s initial support for a for-profit model under his control, a vision that was not realized, prompting his departure. OpenAI’s remarkable technological advancements have since caught Musk’s attention, who now seeks to associate himself with the company’s success.

OpenAI has requested the court to classify the case as “complex,” aiming to establish certain boundaries for the discovery process. The company also advocates for a prompt and decisive dismissal of Musk’s lawsuit, fearing that Musk might exploit the discovery phase to gain access to OpenAI’s confidential records and technology.

Meanwhile, Musk has ventured into the AI domain with his own company, XAI, positioning it as a competitor to OpenAI. OpenAI argues that Musk’s legal demands, including making all of OpenAI’s technology and research public, are unprecedented and would unjustly benefit Musk’s for-profit AI enterprise, which has yet to achieve significant market success.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Musk’s legal team has yet to respond to the allegations and the ongoing dispute between the two parties.
