A chilling narrative has emerged from Ohio, where a mother fabricated a story to law enforcement about discovering her infant daughter deceased in her crib, following a secret getaway to a tropical paradise.
Kristel Candelario, 32, faced the grim reality when her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn, was found lifeless, having succumbed to starvation amidst squalor, after being left alone for an extended period of 10 days.
This week, a court handed down a life sentence to Candelario, who was captured on police bodycam footage, misleading officers with claims that her daughter had been ill, vomiting throughout the week of June 2023. Contrary to her statements, Candelario was actually basking on the beaches of Puerto Rico.
In the harrowing footage, she nonchalantly informed the officers, “She had no food; she was refusing it.” Meanwhile, Candelario had been posting cheerful vacation photos online, under captions that hinted at her enjoying the moments, oblivious to her daughter’s plight.
A medical examiner later confirmed the cause of death as starvation and severe dehydration, a revelation that a prosecutor remarked would haunt him for years to come.
Despite initially denying her actions, Candelario later admitted guilt to charges of aggravated murder and child endangerment. Bodycam footage revealed her attempts to mislead the police, claiming the toddler was “refusing food.”
During her sentencing, Judge Brendan Sheehan condemned Candelario’s actions as “the ultimate betrayal,” sentencing her to life without parole. He poignantly noted that unlike her daughter, Candelario would receive food and water in prison.
