Ranking the Remaining Contenders in the March Madness Tournament

The clock struck twelve earlier than usual this year, transforming all the carriages back into pumpkins as the March Madness Cinderellas bid farewell in the men’s NCAA Tournament. Typically, the tournament’s second weekend features at least one surprise team from a less heralded conference. However, this year proved an exception. Aside from regular Sweet 16 attendees Gonzaga and San Diego State, the remaining contenders hail from the sport’s powerhouse conferences. Impressively, the top eight seeds and 14 of the top 20 have secured their spots in the next round.

While the allure of an underdog story captivates many, the strength of the remaining contenders promises a weekend of fiercely competitive regional battles. As spectators, we can only hope the games live up to our expectations.

Among the 16 teams still in contention, any could emerge victorious on their day. Yet, a hierarchy is taking shape, one that doesn’t necessarily align with the seeding by the committee. Let’s take a fresh look at the teams as if the tournament were kicking off anew this weekend.

Connecticut stands out as the team to beat. The defending champions have been on a tear, with only a single loss since the year began—a defeat at the hands of Creighton on February 20.

Purdue’s journey mirrors the early success Virginia experienced in 2019, with the Boilermakers avoiding the turnovers that have occasionally marred their performance. With Zach Edey and the guards finding their rhythm, Purdue’s potential seems boundless.

North Carolina, with a dynamic lead guard in RJ Davis and a formidable frontcourt, shares similarities with the program’s previous championship teams. The question remains whether they can uncover additional scoring options when faced with a team that matches their rebounding prowess.

Iowa State, though not the flashiest, has matched the best in postseason play, including a stellar Big 12 tournament run. Despite a challenging regional draw, dismissing the Cyclones would be unwise.

Houston, as one of the No. 1 seeds, narrowly escaped Texas A&M in the second round. Their physical play could be tested again if future games are closely officiated.

Tennessee, bolstered by Dalton Knecht and a healthy Zakai Zeigler, sometimes struggles offensively. However, their defensive unity helped them overcome Texas, suggesting they could advance further if they’ve shaken off their previous game’s issues.

Illinois boasts the firepower to outscore most rivals, with Terrence Shannon Jr. leading the charge. Yet, their defensive focus, or lack thereof, makes their upcoming game against Iowa State a precarious proposition.

Marquette, with Tyler Kolek and Cam Jones in form, remains one of the tournament’s most thrilling teams to watch. However, their limited inside presence and absence of a true rim protector might limit their progress.

Arizona’s fate may hinge on Caleb Love’s performance, with their talent undeniable but their consistency in question.

Duke, following a commanding win over James Madison, may have discovered the resilience coach Jon Scheyer seeks. Their next test against Houston, a team that thrives on physical play, will be telling.

Creighton, having bested UConn previously, possesses the experience and firepower to exceed expectations, though their reliance on perimeter shooting could be a double-edged sword against Tennessee.

San Diego State, no stranger to this stage, has enjoyed a smoother journey than last year’s team. An underdog against the Huskies, an upset could propel them further.

Gonzaga’s nine consecutive Sweet 16 appearances underscore the program’s remarkable consistency. Their history of postseason surprises should not be underestimated.

North Carolina State, the tournament’s remaining Cinderella, faces a challenging path ahead. Yet, their growing belief with each close victory makes them a team to watch.

Clemson remains an enigma, performing best against NCAA Tournament-level competition outside the ACC. Observers are left wondering when their inconsistency might resurface.

Alabama, known for their fast-paced play, remains the wildcard. While capable of outshooting any team, stringing together enough high-level performances to claim the title remains a formidable challenge.
