CLEVELAND – Today, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland Clinic, and Bedrock Real Estate unveiled the initial official renderings of the Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center. Located along the Cuyahoga River in the heart of downtown Cleveland, this center is set to become the new headquarters for the Cavaliers, focusing on the enhancement of athlete performance. Spanning over 210,000 square feet, it’s poised to be among the largest training facilities globally.
The architectural design, crafted by the renowned firm Populous, marks the first vertical project within Bedrock’s ambitious Cuyahoga Riverfront Master Plan. This $3.5 billion initiative aims to rejuvenate 35 acres of riverfront, emphasizing accessibility and sustainability. This development signifies a new chapter in the partnership between the Cavaliers and Cleveland Clinic, promising to be a lasting asset for the community. It will not only attract elite athletes from across the globe but also aims to establish Cleveland as a premier destination for sports science and wellness.
Dan Gilbert, Chairman of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Founder & Chairman of Bedrock, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to transform downtown Cleveland into a more vibrant and growth-focused neighborhood. He thanked the city of Cleveland and the Cleveland Clinic for their support in this transformative project that will spark a new vision for the riverfront.
The Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center represents a significant investment in the Cavaliers’ long-term success and sustainability. Upon completion, it will underscore the team’s reputation as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking franchises in professional sports. The center will amalgamate a unique array of resources aimed at prolonging athletes’ careers and helping them reach peak performance levels.
Koby Altman, Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations, emphasized the facility’s role as a game-changer for the franchise. The investment underscores the franchise’s commitment to player well-being and skill enhancement. The collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic, combined with the downtown location, is set to offer another significant attraction to Northeast Ohio.
The center will provide comprehensive care not only for professional athletes but also for the general public, across all sports and levels. It will feature state-of-the-art training equipment and access to a broad spectrum of medical professionals. Leveraging artificial intelligence and big data, the center aims to unlock new insights into human performance, offering athletes a competitive edge. These insights will also benefit broader populations, including healthcare patients, first responders, and military personnel.
Tom Mihaljevic, MD, CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic, highlighted the project’s potential to enhance Cleveland’s landscape and health through innovative care and multidisciplinary approaches. The partnership with Bedrock Real Estate and the ongoing collaboration with the Cavaliers underscore the project’s significance.
Since 1993, the Cleveland Clinic has been the official healthcare provider for the Cavaliers, marking over three decades of high-quality care. The Global Peak Performance Center is the most ambitious collaboration between the two entities to date.
The center’s design, led by Populous Studio in collaboration with the Cavaliers and Bedrock, draws inspiration from the Cuyahoga River and its surrounding valley. It aims to create a seamless connection from the core to the shore, introducing a public kayak launch to allow the community to enjoy the waterfront. Located just blocks from the Gateway Sports Complex and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, the center is set to bring new energy to downtown Cleveland.
Through a comprehensive approach encompassing training, treatment, nutrition, and recovery, the center will be the first Cleveland Clinic-backed facility open to the public. It will also support the Cavs Academy program, reaching over 50,000 youth athletes in Northeast Ohio annually.
Pending approval, the groundbreaking for the Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center is expected before the end of 2024. For more information, please visit cavs.com/performancecenter.
