Surveillance Footage Captures Tragic Murder of Philadelphia Rapper Phat Geez

In Philadelphia, a tragic event unfolded over the weekend, resulting in the death of local rapper Phat Geez. The incident, which led to the rapper’s untimely demise, was captured on surveillance footage. This footage revealed the vehicle used by the assailant.

Authorities are now using this video in hopes of tracking down those responsible for the fatal shooting. The footage, sourced from a Ring camera and shared by CBS News Philadelphia, depicts Derrick Gant—better known by his stage name Phat Geez—stepping out of a residence and approaching a car parked on North Taney Street in Brewerytown.

An exchange between Gant and an individual inside the car escalated into an argument, culminating in Gant being shot moments later. The captured video provides a haunting glimpse into the rapper’s final moments on March 17, 2024, on Taney Street.

Gant’s funeral service, held at The Met Philadelphia, saw an overwhelming turnout. Originally scheduled to conclude at 11:30 a.m., the viewing extended beyond its planned time due to the large number of attendees. This turnout was a testament to Phat Geez’s beloved status within the community. Off-camera, relatives expressed their grief, emphasizing that Gant was a positive influence, especially for the youth, and did not deserve his fate.

Tony Roberts, a family friend, remembered Gant as a generous and kind-hearted individual. “It’s tragic to lose your life like this in front of your home. It hurts. This will be felt for years. Something like this you just don’t get over,” Roberts said.

In a recent endeavor, Gant released a song titled “Nogunzone,” aiming to use his music as a platform to combat gun violence. His efforts to make a positive impact were cut short by this tragic event.

Philadelphia’s own Meek Mill also expressed his sorrow over Gant’s death on X, highlighting the city’s harsh realities. Gant’s murder during Ramadan, a sacred month for Muslims, added a deeper layer of sorrow to the tragedy. His uncle, Marcus Fox, shared in an interview that while they believe Gant is in paradise, the family is left grappling with grief and disbelief.

As the investigation continues, police have yet to identify any suspects. They urge anyone with information to come forward, hoping to bring justice for Gant and his loved ones.
