Third Fatal Shooting in Five Months on Same Gulf Freeway Corner Claims Houston Store Clerk’s Life

In Houston, a wave of shock and sadness swept through the community as news spread about the tragic death of Steven Mendoza, a store clerk who was fatally shot at a gas station convenience store close to Hobby airport. Loyal customers, unable to accept the grim reality, arrived at the scene, clinging to a sliver of hope that the reports were mistaken.

Edward McClain expressed his admiration for Mendoza, describing him as a friendly and well-known figure among those who frequented the gas station. “He’s such a nice guy, a people’s guy, everybody knows him. If you come to this gas station, trust me, you’re going to know him,” McClain said.

Linda Mack shared her grief, emphasizing how Mendoza felt almost like a member of her own family. The sense of loss was palpable among those who knew him well.

Tre Lee reminisced about the personal conversations he had with Mendoza, often talking about his children. These interactions highlighted the close-knit relationship between Mendoza and the community.

The incident that led to Mendoza’s death unfolded around 12:45 am at the store located at the intersection of the Gulf Freeway and Monroe Road. According to investigators, the sequence of events began when three men arrived in a car. Initially, one of them entered the store pretending to make a purchase, left, and then returned with the other two men. Shortly after, one of the assailants opened fire, resulting in Mendoza’s death. The three men then fled the scene in their vehicle, as reported by the Houston Police Department (HPD).

HPD Lt. R. Willkens noted that Mendoza was armed at the time, possibly anticipating trouble. However, it remains unclear if he managed to fire any shots in defense.

Lee mentioned that Mendoza always carried a firearm for self-protection, underscoring the dangers he faced.

This incident is not the first of its kind in the area, highlighting a pattern of violence that has left the community on edge.

McClain voiced his constant concern for safety, a sentiment echoed by many in the vicinity.

Deadly shootings are just one aspect of the broader issue of violence in the area. HPD’s crime map reveals that in the past month alone, 50 violent crimes, including aggravated assaults, sexual assaults, car theft, and robbery, were reported within a mile radius of the store.

Mack expressed her doubts about continuing to visit the area, citing the escalating violence as a major deterrent.

The community’s sense of safety remains shattered until the perpetrators are apprehended. HPD urges anyone with information to come forward.

This tragic event has left a void in the hearts of those who knew Steven Mendoza, a reminder of the urgent need for action to address the violence plaguing the community.
