Ariana Grande’s ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Shines Bright, Securing No. 1 Spot on Billboard 200

Ariana Grande has just landed her sixth No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart with her latest album, “Eternal Sunshine.” This achievement comes as the album debuts at the top of the chart for the week dated March 23. It kicked off with an impressive 227,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. for the week ending March 14, as reported by Luminate. This marks the biggest week for any album in 2024 so far.

Ariana Grande has previously topped the chart with her albums “Positions” in 2020, “Thank U, Next” in 2019, “Sweetener” in 2018, “My Everything” in 2014, and “Yours Truly” in 2013.

The Billboard 200 chart is a ranking of the week’s most popular albums in the U.S., taking into account multi-metric consumption measured in equivalent album units. These units are compiled by Luminate and include album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The chart for March 23, 2024, will be fully available on Billboard’s website on March 19.

Out of the 227,000 units “Eternal Sunshine” earned in its first week, 148,000 were SEA units. This translates to 194.92 million on-demand official streams of the album’s songs. Album sales contributed 77,000 units, and TEA units added another 2,000. “Eternal Sunshine” has outperformed the debut of Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) and Ty Dolla $ign’s “Vultures 1,” which launched with 148,000 units.

“Eternal Sunshine” saw a boost in its first-week sales thanks to its availability in 12 physical configurations, including six vinyl and six CD offerings, all with the same tracklist. There was also a standard digital download and a “slightly deluxe” digital download, which included four bonus tracks. The vinyl editions, all in ruby red, included five with alternate cover art. Four of these were exclusively sold through Grande’s official webstore, with one exclusive to Target. The vinyl sales alone reached 33,000, marking Grande’s biggest vinyl sales week, surpassing “Positions” in 2021.

The album was released on March 8 and was led by the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Yes, And?,” which debuted at the top of the chart dated Jan. 27. Grande announced the new album on Jan. 17 and promoted it with appearances as the musical guest on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on March 9 and as a presenter at the Academy Awards on March 10.

On the new Billboard 200, Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time” has moved down to No. 2, despite a slight increase to 68,000 equivalent album units earned. Other albums in the top 10 include Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season,” Ye and Ty Dolla $ign’s “Vultures 1,” and SZA’s “SOS,” among others.
