BalletMet Unveils Exciting New Collection of Short Ballet Performances

This weekend, BalletMet in Columbus, Ohio, is unveiling a captivating new series of short ballets. Titled “Asian Voices,” this collection is set to grace the stage at the Riffe Center’s Davidson Theatre in downtown Columbus until March 23. It showcases the creative genius of three Asian choreographers, offering audiences a unique glimpse into diverse artistic perspectives.

Among the featured works is “Seasons” by BalletMet’s own artistic director, Edwaard Liang. Additionally, audiences will be treated to the world premiere of “Timeless Tide” by choreographer Yue Yin. The lineup is completed with “Flight of Fancy” by Ma Cong, a piece that draws its inspiration from the beauty and joy of nature.

Ma Cong shared that his inspiration struck during a visit to California. Captivated by the stunning landscapes, the fresh air, and the vibrant colors of nature, he felt a surge of positivity and joy. This profound experience, coupled with a piece of music that tied all these elements together, motivated him to create a ballet that would elevate the human spirit.

Originally from the southwest of China, Cong has spent many years dancing across his homeland before making his way to the United States. His choreography is deeply influenced by Chinese folk and classical dance, enriched by his personal experiences of cultural fusion. Cong’s work reflects the beautiful blend of Eastern and Western cultures, a theme that resonates deeply with his own life experiences, including his marriage to an American.

Cong aims to bridge cultural divides through the universal language of dance. He hopes to unite people from all backgrounds in appreciation of the arts, inspiring and uplifting audiences through his creative expression.

In addition to “Asian Voices,” BalletMet has also announced its lineup for the 2024-2025 season. The season kicks off in October with the return of “Dracula,” followed by the cherished “Nutcracker” in December. The new year will bring productions of “West Side Story” and “Sleeping Beauty,” with “Black Voices” concluding the season next June.

This season promises to be a remarkable showcase of talent, creativity, and cultural diversity, inviting audiences to explore the world of ballet through a fresh and inspiring lens.
