Steve Harley, the iconic leader of the British rock group Cockney Rebel, has passed away at the age of 73.
His family shared the sad news of his death on social media this Sunday, March 17.
In their heartfelt statement, they expressed, “It is with heavy hearts we share that Steve, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, has left us. He passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family. The beautiful birdsong from his cherished woodland was his final serenade. His home was filled with the joyous sounds and laughter of his four adored grandchildren.”
No specific cause of death was mentioned. However, earlier this year, Harley disclosed on his official website that he would not tour in 2024 due to ongoing cancer treatment.
The family’s statement continued, “Steve found great solace in the love and well wishes from his fans during his fight with cancer. We know he would deeply appreciate all the love and support he received throughout his career and his fight until the end. He will be profoundly missed by a multitude of friends, family, and devoted fans worldwide. We kindly ask for privacy as we mourn.”
Harley will forever be remembered for the 1975 chart-topping hit “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)” with Cockney Rebel. Born in London, Harley formed the band in 1972, and they released their debut album, *The Human Menagerie*, a year later. Following several lineup changes, the band was renamed Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, continuing to release hits like *The Psychomodo* in 1974.
Despite “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)” not achieving significant success in the U.S. (it reached No. 98 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1976), the song has been covered by over 100 artists, including Duran Duran, Erasure, and Robbie Williams.
After the band disbanded in 1977, Harley pursued a solo career, with his last album, *Uncovered* (2020), featuring covers of songs by David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, and more.
