In January 2021, the hip-hop world held its breath as Dr. Dre, a monumental figure in the music industry, faced a critical health challenge. After suffering a brain aneurysm, the Compton-born superstar found himself in the hospital, navigating a precarious journey back to health.
Dr. Dre recently shared his harrowing experience during an appearance on the “This Life of Mine with James Corden” podcast on SiriusXM. He opened up about his time at Cedars Sinai hospital, revealing the severity of his condition.
“I had three strokes,” Dre disclosed to Corden, highlighting the gravity of his situation as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. This revelation came during a period filled with uncertainty and fear.
Recalling the day the aneurysm struck, Dre narrated how he initially dismissed the severity of his symptoms. “I got up and went on about my day, thinking a nap would help,” he shared. However, a friend of his son insisted on taking him to the hospital, a decision that likely saved his life.
Upon reaching urgent care, doctors quickly realized Dre was experiencing a significant medical event. His condition was so severe that he lost consciousness multiple times and was admitted to the ICU for two weeks. “Doctors kept telling me how lucky I was,” Dre recounted to Corden.
Despite leading a healthy lifestyle and staying active, Dre was unaware he had high blood pressure, a condition often referred to as the “silent killer” among Black men. This episode was a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of health.
While the incident didn’t lead to a drastic transformation in Dre’s life, it profoundly impacted his appreciation for life. “It definitely makes you appreciate being alive,” he reflected.
Adding to his list of accolades, Dr. Dre is set to receive his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His star will be placed beside that of his longtime friend and fellow hip-hop legend, Snoop Dogg, on Hollywood Boulevard, marking yet another milestone in his illustrious career.
