This week, Donkeeboy is infusing Austin with a taste of H-Town culture.
In Austin, Texas, the South by Southwest festival is not just about panels, technology, films, and music anymore. Recently, it has started to showcase more artists, allowing them to create live art at various spots throughout the city.
Alex “Donkeeboy” Roman Jr. is among these talented individuals. As an official SXSW presenter, he worked alongside other muralists to create a unique piece of art.
However, Donkeeboy’s visit to Austin isn’t solely for painting. He aims to introduce some of Houston’s vibrant culture to the city. Together with David Anderson III, founder of The Heist Agency, and Carlos Buentello, founder of Mad Rabbits Riot Club, they form “Extended FAM.” This group, representing Extended Food, Art, and Music, travels to different cities to showcase pop-up style art events that combine food, art, and music.
Donkeeboy embarked on his full-time art career about 20 years ago. After moving from Houston to Los Angeles in 2007 to immerse himself in the thriving street-art scene, he eventually returned to Houston. There, he made a significant impact, with his work being featured at Art Basel, Minute Maid Park, and in cities like New York and Miami. He has also collaborated with every professional sports team in Houston on various projects.
Over time, he has also worked closely with his mother, “Donkeemom” Sylvia Roman. Together, they have completed over 65 murals.
Donkeeboy shared with KVUE the impact his art has on others, stating, “I’ve heard stories from my students where they feel as if now they have a purpose because of the art that they’re making.”
Although this is his first year participating in SXSW, it’s unlikely to be his last.
He believes, “Art is a way to communicate and meet people. It just unites people, brings people together.”
