Jason Momoa’s character, Duncan Idaho, might make a comeback in “Dune: Part Three.” This opens up exciting opportunities for Momoa’s involvement in the future of the franchise. Duncan’s departure was a pivotal scene in the 2021 “Dune” film. However, the original books reveal his return as a ghola, complete with memories from his past life. Momoa has shown enthusiasm about returning as Duncan in the next movie, hinting at intriguing developments for his character’s journey.
In “Dune” (2021), directed by Denis Villeneuve, Duncan Idaho was introduced. He was a warrior loyal to Duke Leto of House Atreides and became a trusted friend and ally to Paul, the Duke’s heir. When the Emperor betrayed Leto and his family, Duncan bravely fought to his last breath to safeguard Paul and his mother.
Though Duncan’s life ended tragically in the movie, Momoa hinted at a possible return to the series. In an interview with Men’s Health, he teased his future involvement but kept the details under wraps to avoid trouble with the producers. He mentioned, “It’ll be a good future now if Duncan Idaho may have some sort of… You know what we did have? Oh man, I can’t actually say this. I’ll get in trouble. Well, there was something that was really cool that went into the movie that didn’t make the first one, and it was pretty epic… I’ll try to get it back in the third one.”
Duncan Idaho’s demise was clearly depicted in “Dune.” He chose to make a final stand against the Sardaukar forces to allow Paul and his mother to escape. Despite taking down many enemies, he was ultimately outnumbered. His heroic last stand solidified his loyalty to House Atreides, seemingly concluding Momoa’s role in the series.
However, according to Frank Herbert’s novels, Duncan’s story doesn’t end there. Although he couldn’t be part of “Dune: Part Two,” he is expected to return in “Dune Messiah,” which will largely influence the plot of “Part Three.” Duncan is resurrected as a ghola, a clone with the potential to recall his past lives’ memories, though this process is complex and time-consuming.
Duncan’s memory recovery might not be immediate, but his presence is crucial to the narrative. “Dune: Part Two” has already introduced significant changes, yet Duncan’s role in “Dune Messiah” is vital, especially his impact on Paul’s choices. Momoa is eager to reprise his role, regardless of how Duncan fits into “Dune: Part Three.”
“Dune” (2021) is available for streaming on Max, and “Dune: Part Two” is still showing in theaters.
