London Eurovision Screening Event Called Off Over Controversy Surrounding Israel’s Involvement

London’s most anticipated Eurovision Song Contest viewing event has been called off. The announcement came from both the Rio Cinema and the event’s organizers, Eurovision Party London.

The decision was made after careful discussions between Eurovision Party London and the Rio Cinema. They chose not to broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest’s Grand Final as long as Israel is part of the competition. The statement was shared on X by Rio Cinema. They expressed their continued partnership with Eurovision Party London, highlighting the event’s role in promoting unity, inclusivity, and equality through music. They look forward to uniting under the banner of music in the future and will keep supporting charitable causes, including Doctors Without Borders and Medical Aid for Palestine.

Eurovision Party London also shared their sentiments online. They echoed the sentiment of unity and the positive impact of the Eurovision Song Contest when it stays true to its principles of inclusivity and equality. They expressed regret over the decision but remained hopeful for future unity through music.

This decision follows a significant move where 400 celebrities and industry leaders endorsed Israel’s participation in this year’s contest.

The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest is set to be held in Malmö Arena, Sweden, on May 9, 11, and 13. It’s an event organized by the European Broadcasting Union, which includes over 100 member organizations from 56 countries and 34 associates worldwide.

Variety has reached out to the event organizers for further comments.
