Olivia Rodrigo has decided to stop giving out free contraceptives, lubricants, and morning-after pills at her concerts following public criticism.
The decision came after organizers spoke to Variety, explaining that intense media coverage led to a change in plans. They were informed on Thursday afternoon that local abortion funds would not be allowed to distribute these free items at her shows.
The change was initiated by Rodrigo’s team, as reported by Variety. This decision was communicated through Slack by the National Network of Abortion Funds, which had collaborated with Rodrigo to set up booths at her North American tour locations.
Jade Hurley, from the DC Abortion Fund, shared with Variety that Rodrigo’s team expressed concerns about distributing such items since children attend the concerts. Hurley emphasized the importance of providing youth with access to birth control and emergency contraception, noting that their efforts are legal across all states.
Breitbart News highlighted that Rodrigo had previously donated a portion of her concert ticket sales to pro-abortion groups. She also distributed Plan B pills to her fans, including at a concert in St. Louis, Missouri. This state was notable for its strict abortion laws following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade in 2022.
Fans in St. Louis shared images online of the free contraceptives and morning-after pills they received at her concert.
Rodrigo has been vocal about her stance on abortion, using her platform to promote the cause. She introduced “Julie,” a morning-after pill, to her fans, emphasizing her commitment to making abortion rights a key part of her public persona.
The artist, known for her roles on Disney Channel shows like Bizaardvark and the High School Musical series, has been outspoken about reproductive rights. During her “Sour” tour in 2022, she urged her young audience to fight for safe abortion access.
In a bold move, she criticized the Supreme Court for overturning Roe, dedicating Lily Allen’s song “Fuck You” to the justices who voted in favor of the decision. Rodrigo expressed her fear and devastation over the impact this ruling could have on women and girls.
