Be warned, spoilers for “Sons of Star Trek” #1 lie ahead.
“Star Trek” is reimagining Jake Sisko as a prominent Federation hero. As Captain Benjamin Sisko’s son, Jake was a central figure throughout all seven seasons of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” Now, he’s at the forefront in “Sons of Star Trek” #1, finding himself as a Starfleet member in a parallel universe.
Morgan Hampton penned “Sons of Star Trek” #1, with Angel Hernandez providing the artwork. The story follows Jake as he tries to find his place in the galaxy after the Klingon Uprising. Hearing Jake’s woes, Q’s son, Q Jr, decides to lend a hand. He transports Jake, Nog, and Alexander to an alternate universe where Jake serves as an ensign in Starfleet. In this reality, Jake is a legacy officer aboard the USS Avery.
Jake, Nog, and Alexander are determined to see Q Jr’s plan through to the end, no matter what it entails.
Jake Sisko was a revolutionary character in “Star Trek.” He chose not to follow in his father’s footsteps, making him a more intriguing character.
Played by Cirroc Lofton, Jake Sisko was unlike any child character seen before in the “Star Trek” series. The franchise’s first attempt at a child character, Wesley Crusher from “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” suffered from poor writing initially. However, by the time “Deep Space Nine” aired in 1993, the writing for child characters had significantly improved. Jake Sisko benefited from this, receiving better writing and character development.
Cirroc Lofton, the actor behind Jake Sisko, hosts a “Star Trek”-themed podcast called “The 7th Rule.”
Throughout “Deep Space Nine,” Jake Sisko’s story was compelling. He grew up under the shadow of his father, a respected Starfleet officer, and felt the pressure to join Starfleet. However, Jake realized early on that Starfleet wasn’t his calling. He pursued a career in writing instead, eventually working for the Federation News Service. Despite his achievements, Jake still feels restless and unsure of his place. Q Jr decides to help Jake navigate these feelings.
Jake Sisko’s experience with Starfleet was different in the primary “Star Trek” universe compared to the alternate one Q Jr sends him to. In the alternate universe, Jake is a Starfleet officer, a role he adapts to, aiming to return to his father and his original reality. In both universes, Jake is a hero, with or without Starfleet.
