Chicago’s Mayor, Brandon Johnson, is set to begin the eviction of numerous undocumented immigrants from city shelters as a 60-day policy takes effect.
Critics, especially from the progressive side, have voiced their concerns over this policy, which has seen multiple delays since November due to cold weather. Johnson announced that 35 migrants would be evicted on Saturday, with an estimated 5,600 more to follow in the coming weeks.
The city currently provides shelter to 11,200 migrants, a decrease from the late December figure of 14,900, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

A second measles case has been confirmed at a Chicago migrant shelter.
Exceptions to the eviction policy include those with medical conditions, those securing housing, victims of domestic violence, or pregnant individuals. A measles outbreak at one of the shelters is also a concern.
Johnson highlighted that exemptions exist for individuals actively seeking housing or facing extenuating circumstances related to health or pregnancy.
A larger group of about 2,000 migrants will need to leave after next week and by the end of April, as per the Johnson administration.

Texas has reportedly spent nearly $150M transporting migrants to ‘sanctuary’ cities.
Evictions will be phased, with 244 migrants set to leave by the end of March and 1,782 more expected to be evicted from Chicago shelters between April 1 and April 30.
Evicted migrants are directed to the city’s “landing zone” at 800 S. Desplaines St., where they can reapply for accommodation. This zone serves as a temporary shelter with city buses available for staying.
Approximately 10% of migrants in shelters are eligible for employment authorization, and about 1,300 households are in the process of obtaining state rental assistance.
Several City Council members have opposed the evictions, with 18 signing a letter to the mayor, urging him to reconsider the policy for the sake of the migrants’ stability.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has announced that evictions will start on Saturday.
Lawmakers urged Johnson not to proceed with evictions in January, and he complied, considering the severe weather conditions then.
On Wednesday, Johnson criticized the lack of federal support and called on Congress to take action against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for sending migrants to the sanctuary city.
In January, Johnson accused Abbott of targeting cities led by Black officials with migrant busses.
