From Humble Beginnings: How Gil Santos and a Security Guard Launched Mike Gorman’s Illustrious Career

In the backseat of Mike Gorman’s car, a simple hat might have been the key to a life-changing moment.

Mike Gorman, known for his iconic voice behind the Celtics’ games, was on the brink of ending his final season. His journey, spanning an impressive 43 years, could have taken a completely different route if not for an encounter with a local sports broadcasting legend and a vigilant security guard.

During the early 1970s, while serving as an aviator for the Navy, Gorman harbored dreams of becoming a sports broadcaster. However, his lack of experience stood as a formidable barrier, making it difficult for him to secure a job in the field.

Undeterred, Gorman sought advice from Gil Santos, a renowned announcer, by visiting the WBZ radio station. His initial attempt was thwarted by a security guard who denied him entry. That was until the guard noticed an item in Gorman’s car.

“What’s that in the back seat?” the guard inquired, pointing to a baseball cap. Gorman explained it was from VP-44, a squadron he was part of in Maine. Discovering their shared Navy background, the guard decided to help Gorman.

The guard’s willingness to assist led to a conversation with Santos, who, impressed by Gorman’s background and determination, helped him secure a position at WNBH. This opportunity marked the beginning of Gorman’s broadcasting career, eventually leading him to roles at WPRO in Providence and as the sports director at WPRI.

Gorman’s break into television came when he became the Celtics’ play-by-play announcer, forming a historic partnership with Celtics legend Tommy Heinsohn. His career also included broadcasting Big East basketball games for ESPN in the 1980s and covering two Summer Olympics for NBC. In 2021, his contributions to sports broadcasting were recognized with an induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Reflecting on his journey, Gorman credits the security guard’s act of kindness for his successful career. Without that moment of connection over a baseball cap, his life could have taken a completely different path.

Gorman has also expressed his gratitude towards Santos, especially after Santos’ passing in 2018. He credits Santos for not only giving him his time but also for opening the door to a career in broadcasting—a gesture that profoundly changed Gorman’s life.

Gorman’s story is a testament to the impact of kindness and the unexpected moments that can define our paths. It’s a reminder that sometimes, it’s the small things, like a hat in the backseat, that can lead to the biggest changes in our lives.
