We’re thrilled to share some exciting news from our National Editor Philip Rucker, Deputy National Editor Amy Fiscus, and Senior Politics Editor Dan Eggen.
Nick Baumann, a journalist renowned for his leadership skills and extensive experience in steering national political coverage, is now part of The Washington Post team as the deputy politics editor.
In his new role, Nick will be the right-hand man to the senior politics editor. He’ll play a pivotal role in leading our National politics team as they embark on comprehensive coverage of the 2024 presidential race, the White House, Congress, and state politics across various platforms.
Nick comes to The Post with a rich background of over ten years in editing political news, investigations, and feature stories. His deep understanding of the current political climate in America, combined with his expertise in the digital media landscape, positions him perfectly to spearhead distinctive and impactful coverage. Known for his empathetic leadership and sharp editorial eye, Nick has consistently been recognized for his ability to identify compelling stories and nurture journalistic talent.
Before joining us, Nick was the deputy Washington bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times. There, he led the charge on the 2024 campaign coverage and managed a wide array of stories on Congress, the White House, and the national immigration detention system.
His journey in journalism also includes a significant tenure as politics editor at The Atlantic. During his time there, he oversaw the magazine’s digital coverage of the 2020 election and the events of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol. His team delivered in-depth stories on various topics, including the personal loss of Rep. Jamie Raskin before the Capitol riot, misconceptions about pro-Trump Latinos, and the transformation of a Colorado county into a focal point of national debate due to COVID-19.
Prior to his role at The Atlantic, Nick was a senior enterprise editor at HuffPost. His leadership there led to groundbreaking reporting that won the 2016 Knight Award for Public Service and the 2017 Writers Guild Award. His team’s investigative work prompted significant changes in Nevada prisons’ use of firearms for inmate control and resulted in an FDA warning that closed a company promoting health benefits from “young blood” infusions. Furthermore, his supervision of an investigation into jail deaths was recognized as a finalist for the Livingston Award, and he successfully launched an email newsletter that attracted nearly 200,000 subscribers in its first year. Nick’s career also includes valuable experiences as a senior editor at Mother Jones and as a blogger for the Economist.
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Nick Baumann as he begins his journey with The Post on March 25.
