On a recent Sunday, Mike Pence, the former Vice President, expressed strong disapproval of Donald Trump’s characterization of individuals facing charges from the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot as “hostages.” He shared his thoughts during an appearance on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.”
Pence highlighted the inappropriateness of comparing these individuals to actual hostages, especially at a time when real American hostages are being held in Gaza. He emphasized that calling people undergoing the legal process in the U.S. “hostages” is simply not right.
He further pointed out the seriousness of the January 6 events. Pence, who was a direct target of the violence that day, recalled the terrifying moment when an angry mob stormed the Capitol, even going as far as to set up gallows outside and chant threats against him.
Pence shared his belief that while some may have been swept up in the moment and entered the Capitol, they deserve the due process of law for any nonviolent actions. However, he firmly stated that the assaults on police officers and the resulting loss of life were tragic and should not be understated.
This conversation came shortly after Pence announced that he would not be endorsing Trump, who was his running mate in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, for the presidency in the upcoming election.
On the day before Pence’s interview, Trump had spoken out, calling the January 6 detainees “hostages” and criticizing their treatment. He pledged to address their situation immediately upon returning to office, referring to them as “unbelievable patriots.”
