NFL franchises’ decision-makers are tirelessly preparing for the upcoming 2024 NFL draft in April. Drawing from my tenure as a general manager and executive vice president for the Dolphins (2015-18) and Jets (2006-12), I’ve decided to dive into the first 32 picks for the fourth consecutive year, sharing my personal selections.
This isn’t your typical mock draft. Unlike draft analysts who predict selections based on industry buzz, I’m stepping into the shoes of the general manager for each team with a first-round pick, guided solely by my own evaluations, preferences, and strategic thinking.
This year, I’ve even orchestrated a trade, believing it benefits both parties involved. So, without further ado, let’s explore my choices for the top 32 picks, kicking off with a straightforward selection for Bears GM Ryan Poles at No. 1. Also, don’t miss my “SportsCenter” special airing Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN2 for more insights.
Caleb Williams, the quarterback from USC, stands out as a remarkable talent with a knack for playmaking. The Bears’ trade of Justin Fields to Pittsburgh paves the way for Williams to shine in Chicago. Surrounded by talents like Keenan Allen, Cole Kmet, DJ Moore, D’Andre Swift, and Gerald Everett, Williams is poised for rapid development and success. Despite concerns over his 83 sacks and 16 fumbles in college, his pocket fundamentals are expected to improve. Averaging over 9 yards per pass attempt across three college seasons and throwing 93 touchdown passes, Williams’ potential is undeniable.
Drake Maye, the North Carolina quarterback, impresses with his ideal size, pocket mobility, and ability to execute throws with accuracy and anticipation. Losing receiver Josh Downs to the NFL didn’t hinder his performance, as he threw for 3,608 yards last season. His traits remind me of Justin Herbert, and with an offense featuring Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Austin Ekeler, and Brian Robinson Jr., Maye is set to excel in his rookie year.
Jayden Daniels, coming off an exceptional final season at LSU with 40 touchdown passes, a 72.2% completion rate, and over 1,100 rushing yards, raises concerns about his build but has the potential for greatness in New England. The presence of Jacoby Brissett allows the Patriots to patiently develop Daniels without immediate pressure to play him.
J.J. McCarthy’s long-term upside is too good to pass up for the Cardinals, especially with Kyler Murray’s injury history. McCarthy’s impressive college stats and physical readiness make him a better option than Murray right now, despite Murray’s significant contract.
The Chargers’ decision to focus on protecting Justin Herbert by selecting Joe Alt, an offensive tackle from Notre Dame, underscores the importance of a solid offensive line. Despite the availability of top receivers, Alt’s performance in college and his fit within Jim Harbaugh’s philosophy make him the right choice.
Malik Nabers from LSU emerges as a dynamic prospect for the Giants, offering speed and playmaking ability that the team desperately needs. His career average of 15.9 yards per reception and 14 touchdowns last season make him an exciting addition to New York’s offense.
JC Latham, an offensive tackle from Alabama, is targeted by the Titans to bolster their offensive line. His impressive college performance and potential under OL coach Bill Callahan make him a valuable asset for Tennessee’s right side.
Dallas Turner, an edge rusher from Alabama, is selected by the Falcons to enhance their pass rush. His outstanding combine performance and productivity at Alabama make him an immediate asset to Raheem Morris’ defensive scheme.
Marvin Harrison Jr., a wide receiver from Ohio State, is chosen by the Bears to complement their offensive arsenal. His resemblance to Larry Fitzgerald and impressive college stats make him an ideal target for Caleb Williams.
The Jets see Olumuyiwa Fashanu from Penn State as a crucial addition to protect their quarterbacks. His exceptional footwork and potential as a perennial All-Pro make him a cornerstone for New York’s offensive line.
This mock draft reflects a blend of strategic needs and the immense talent available in the 2024 NFL draft, offering a glimpse into the potential future of these NFL franchises.
