In Dayton, Ohio, Africentric has a reputation for shining in state championship games. Before their latest match, the Nubians had an impressive record, winning 8 out of 10 state championships in the last 20 years.
This Saturday, they celebrated their ninth championship victory. They led by 13 points early in the fourth quarter and secured a 58-47 win against Ottawa-Glandorf in the Division III title game.
Natiah Nelson, a guard for the team, shared her excitement. “We’ve put in work every day since Tuesday, practicing in the gym,” she said. “It feels amazing to achieve the goals we set last summer as a team.”
This victory was special for Africentric, marking their second consecutive win of back-to-back state titles. With this ninth championship, they’ve set a new record in OHSAA girls’ basketball history.
Kamryn Grant, another guard, expressed her feelings about the win. “It’s surreal to be finishing high school with a state championship,” she said. “I feel incredibly blessed to be part of this moment.”
Africentric’s dedication and hard work have once again led them to a historic win, solidifying their legacy in high school basketball.
