In Hershey, the stage was set for an epic showdown as Berlin Brothersvalley aimed to dethrone the reigning PIAA Class 1A champions, Imani Christian, at the Giant Center. The task ahead was monumental, requiring Berlin Brothersvalley to bring their A-game and hope for an off day from their formidable opponents.
The game commenced with Berlin Brothersvalley keeping pace, but Imani Christian unleashed a powerful offensive onslaught in the second quarter, creating a gap that Berlin found insurmountable. The final score saw Berlin Brothersvalley fall 79-52, a testament to Imani Christian’s dominance on the court.
Berlin’s coach, Tanner Prosser, praised Imani Christian’s quick and athletic defense, acknowledging the challenge his team faced. “They’re quick, athletic defensively. They apply great ball pressure,” Prosser said. He knew his team needed to play their very best and hoped for Imani Christian to underperform, which unfortunately did not happen.
The match began promisingly for Berlin (28-3), leading 11-7 at one point, thanks to a basket by senior Pace Prosser. However, Imani Christian responded with a 13-1 run to close the quarter. The second quarter saw Berlin momentarily close the gap with contributions from junior Mac Foor, who ended the game with 16 points, and senior Craig Jarvis. Yet, Imani Christian, led by senior Nate Brazil’s seven-point streak and junior R.J. Sledge’s pivotal role in a 19-0 run, quickly widened the lead, showcasing their depth and skill.
R.J. Sledge, a transfer from Bishop Canevin, stood out with a game-high 22 points, continuing his family’s rich basketball legacy. Imani Christian’s halftime lead was solidified by a 21-7 run in the second quarter, demonstrating their ability to convert defense into swift offensive strikes.
Berlin’s coach Prosser highlighted the difficulty in countering Imani Christian’s aggressive defense, especially after turnovers. “You can’t get back when you turn the ball over. That’s where the problem happens,” he explained.
Imani Christian didn’t let up, further extending their lead in the third quarter and setting the pace for the remainder of the game. Saints coach Khayree Wilson, in his first year back at the helm, had his team well-prepared, especially in defending against key players like Prosser and Jarvis.
Despite the loss, Berlin Brothersvalley’s journey to the finals was marked by significant achievements, including their fifth consecutive District 5 title and an Inter-County Conference championship. Coach Prosser lauded his junior class for their hard work and dedication, expressing excitement for their future leadership roles.
As Berlin Brothersvalley reflects on their season, the contributions of Pace Prosser, Craig Jarvis, and the entire team will not be forgotten. Their journey to the PIAA Class 1A final, marked by resilience and teamwork, sets a promising foundation for the future.
