In a surprising turn of events, Russell Wilson finds himself facing potential competition. The Pittsburgh Steelers, just one day after sending Kenny Pickett off to the Eagles and a mere six days post-acquiring Wilson from the Broncos, have now made a move for Justin Fields.
The trade details, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, reveal that the Bears will receive a sixth-round pick for the year 2025. This pick could become a fourth-round pick if Fields participates in at least 51 percent of the offensive plays this season. This move sheds light on the Bears’ strategy for the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. They’re not looking to trade it, nor are they in the market for a receiver. Instead, they’re set to pick a quarterback, with USC’s Caleb Williams being the anticipated choice.
Three years after selecting him 11th overall, the Bears have decided to move on from Fields. The acceptance of a third-day pick from the Steelers speaks volumes about how the rest of the league views Fields. Despite accumulating 40 touchdown passes, 30 interceptions, an 82.3 passer rating, a 10-28 record, 2,220 rushing yards, and 14 rushing touchdowns over three seasons, the market for Fields had been relatively stagnant.
The Steelers have completely revamped their quarterback lineup. They’ve transitioned from Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph to now include Wilson and Fields. It’s reported that Fields will assume the role of backup quarterback upon his arrival in Pittsburgh.
Fields is on the last year of his rookie contract, leaving the Steelers with a decision to make regarding his fifth-year option. Activating this option would guarantee Fields $25 million for the year 2025. However, the Steelers might have found themselves a bargain. Wilson has signed a one-year contract for the veteran minimum of $1.21 million, and Fields is set to earn $3.233 million for this season.
