Updated Hot Board 2.0: Leading Candidates for Louisville Cardinals Basketball Head Coach Position

The University of Louisville has made the decision to let go of Kenny Payne, their head basketball coach, after two challenging seasons.

The school’s athletic director, Josh Heird, announced Payne’s dismissal on Wednesday, following a record of 12 wins and 52 losses over two seasons. This decision opens the door to one of the most sought-after college basketball coaching positions in the nation. The announcement came shortly after Louisville’s departure from the ACC Tournament, following a loss to NC State on Tuesday.

This coaching change signifies that, by 2024, Louisville will have seen four different head football coaches in the span of eight years.

Josh Heird expressed his gratitude towards Payne for his long-standing contribution to the university, spanning nearly four decades. He acknowledged Payne’s significant role within the Louisville community. “When we brought Kenny back in 2022, I was one of the staunchest believers in his potential for success. However, it has become evident that we need to make a change to fulfill the expectations and potential of our program. Although it’s tough to transition coaching roles, this move is in the best interest of our program,” Heird stated in a press release.

Heird also extended his thanks to Payne for his commitment to the University of Louisville, wishing him and his family well for the future.

During his time as head coach, Payne’s record against ACC teams stood at 5 wins to 37 losses. The Cardinals had a 4-28 record in his first season and improved slightly to 8-24 in his second season.

Cardinal Authority is currently exploring potential candidates to fill Payne’s position.

The search for a new head coach is underway, as confirmed by Heird, and updates will be provided as the process progresses.

As of March 17, the list of potential candidates has been updated, with Sean Miller, Kevin Willard, and Niko Medved being removed, and Mick Cronin being highlighted as a main contender.
