Renel Brooks-Moon, previously known for her role as the public announcer for the San Francisco Giants, has been honored as the 2024 Woman of the Year by the California State Assembly. This prestigious recognition was announced by District Supervisor Matt Haney on Wednesday.
Renel Brooks-Moon made history in 2000 as the inaugural voice of the SF Giants’ then-new stadium, Pacific Bell Park. Over her 24-year tenure, she broke barriers as the first African-American woman to announce in MLB, the World Series, and as the first woman to publicly announce a championship game in any professional sport.
On March 18, Brooks-Moon shared the news of her departure from the Giants. Her journey before joining the Giants was marked by her education at UC Berkeley and her success as a radio personality and Emmy-winning television host on stations such as KMEL, KISQ, and KBLX, making her a well-known figure in Oakland.
District Supervisor Matt Haney praised Brooks-Moon, highlighting her iconic status in the Bay Area. Her voice is not just familiar; it embodies the identity of the Giants and the Bay Area. Haney commended her for paving the way for women and people of color in broadcasting, her community advocacy, and her support for charities. He emphasized that Brooks-Moon’s contributions have forever changed the broadcasting industry.
Even though Brooks-Moon has ended her role with the Giants, she will continue to contribute as a “special advisor” to the team. In a tribute to her legacy and years of dedication, the PA booth at Oracle Park will bear her name.
The state legislature describes the Woman of the Year award as a recognition of women who have significantly improved the lives of others through their work and service. The award highlights these women as role models, encouraging future generations to make a positive impact in their communities.
Renel Brooks-Moon is set to receive her award at a special ceremony hosted by Assemblymember Haney’s Office in early April 2024, celebrating her remarkable achievements and influence.
