In a recent event, five men from Chile were arrested for a burglary in Baltimore County, Maryland, and are suspected of being involved in additional crimes across several states. These individuals were found to be in the United States illegally, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

On February 3, 2024, the Baltimore County Police Department apprehended Gabriel Matamala-Ponce, Thomas Crisosto-Araya, Jorge Gatica-Vergara, Luis Oyanedel-Valenzuela, and Gabriel Miranda-Gonzalez. They face charges of first-degree attempted burglary among other related offenses.

The police were alerted to a burglary in progress on Tufton Springs Lane around 6:45 p.m. They quickly located and stopped the suspects’ vehicle, arresting them on the spot.

Further investigation linked these five men to four additional burglaries in the county and crimes in North Carolina, Alabama, and Oklahoma. It appears they were part of a theft ring originating from South America.

Baltimore County, Maryland police have taken into custody five men believed to be part of a South American theft group.

ICE has placed immigration detainers on all five individuals, indicating a close monitoring of their cases by ERO Baltimore. These Chilean nationals had entered the U.S. legally as non-immigrants but overstayed their welcome, except for Matamala-Ponce, who entered illegally.

These men are also implicated in criminal activities in other states. Arrest warrants were issued for four of them by the Orange County, North Carolina sheriff’s office for burglary-forced entry of a residence.

Miranda-Gonzalez faced arrest in Orange County, Florida, for petty retail theft and settled the charge with a fine.

Currently, all five are detained in Baltimore County under an immigration detainer, which requests local and state law enforcement to inform ICE before any planned release. This allows ICE to take custody for removal purposes.
