Authorities have successfully apprehended the suspect involved in the murder of a New Mexico State Police officer after a chase and a shooting incident with officers. The suspect, identified as Jaremy Smith, 32, from South Carolina, engaged in a fatal confrontation with Officer Justin Hare on Interstate 40 near mile marker 318. This occurred early Friday morning when Smith, dealing with a flat tire, was approached by Officer Hare.

New Mexico State Police announced on Sunday that Jaremy Smith was captured following a pursuit and an officer-involved shooting with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office had previously reported their involvement in a shooting incident in Albuquerque, near Unser and Anderson Hill. Despite the tense situation, no deputies were injured during the incident.

The confrontation began when Smith attempted to flag down passing drivers. Officer Hare arrived and parked behind Smith’s vehicle. According to New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler, after a brief conversation about the flat tire, Smith drew a gun and shot Officer Hare. Smith then moved to the driver’s side, shot Hare again, and pushed him into the passenger seat.

This tragic event led to the loss of Officer Hare, who was remembered for his service and dedication. Chief Weisler, visibly emotional, recounted how Officer Hare’s final moments were spent offering assistance to someone in need, unaware of the imminent danger. Officer Hare is mourned by his girlfriend and two young children.

In a related development, police revealed that Smith was driving a BMW owned by Phonesia Machado-Fore, a paramedic from South Carolina who was found deceased on Friday. An autopsy is scheduled to determine her cause of death.

This incident has left the community and law enforcement in mourning, as they remember the bravery and sacrifice of Officer Hare. The capture of Jaremy Smith brings a measure of closure to this tragic chapter, as investigations continue to unfold.
