In the early hours of a Sunday morning, a significant incident occurred on Interstate 270 in Gahanna, Ohio. A Mifflin Township Fire Department battalion chief found himself in harm’s way while on duty. His vehicle was struck by another car, leading to an emergency situation that required immediate attention.
The incident unfolded around 12:10 a.m., between Morse Road and Interstate 670. Gahanna Police officers were initially responding to a call about a disabled vehicle on the interstate. Shortly after their arrival, the battalion chief reached the scene, only to become part of an unforeseen accident.
A southbound vehicle collided with the battalion chief’s car, causing a chain reaction that also involved a police cruiser. This prompted a swift response, and the battalion chief was transported to a local hospital as a safety measure. Fortunately, he was later discharged.
The individual driving the car that initiated the collision was also taken to the hospital. Thankfully, their injuries were not life-threatening.
This incident led to the temporary closure of the interstate’s southbound lanes. However, they were reopened after some time, ensuring the flow of traffic resumed.
The event serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of road safety, especially concerning first responders and disabled vehicles. The City of Gahanna spokesperson emphasized the need for drivers to be vigilant and to move over for emergency vehicles and other roadside incidents.
