Officials Announce Capture of Suspect in Fatal Shooting of New Mexico State Police Officer

Authorities recently announced the capture of a suspect linked to the tragic deaths of a state trooper in New Mexico and a paramedic from South Carolina. The arrest occurred on Sunday after a confrontation with law enforcement.

The individual, identified as Jaremy Smith, was apprehended in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. His capture followed a high-speed pursuit by the police, which culminated in an exchange of gunfire involving at least one deputy from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, as reported by the New Mexico State Police.

Smith is believed to be responsible for the deadly shooting of Justin Hare, a New Mexico State Police officer, early on Friday. Additionally, he is suspected in the murder of Phonesia Machado-Fore, a paramedic from South Carolina who was reported missing the day before, according to authorities.

Following his identification by the police on Saturday, Smith became the focus of an extensive search. New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler made it clear in a press conference, stating, “Jaremy Smith, we are coming for you.”

The pursuit began when deputies from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office spotted Smith driving in Albuquerque around 8 a.m. local time. The chase ultimately led to Smith’s arrest, authorities confirmed.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office announced their involvement in a deputy-related shooting in the area of Unser and Anderson Hill, a neighborhood in southwest Albuquerque. They revealed that the Multi-Agency Task Force is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Fortunately, no deputies were harmed during the event, as confirmed by officials.
