Seahawks Secure Linebacker Jerome Baker with One-Year Contract, Reports Confirm

The Seattle Seahawks have welcomed a new linebacker to their ranks. Jerome Baker has inked a one-year contract with the Seahawks, a deal that could be worth up to $7 million, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. At 27, Baker brings with him a wealth of experience from his six seasons with the Miami Dolphins, the team that drafted him in the third round from Ohio State back in 2018. Despite signing a three-year extension with the Dolphins before the 2021 season, Baker found himself released this offseason.

In a significant overhaul of their linebacker corps, the Seahawks have not only brought in Baker but also Tyrel Dodson earlier in the week, formerly of the Buffalo Bills. This new duo has caught the attention of Seattle Sports’ Brock Huard, who took to social media to express his excitement. Huard highlighted that, according to Pro Football Focus, the Seahawks now boast the 3rd and 18th best coverage linebackers in the NFL based on their 2023 performance, referring to Dodson and Baker respectively.

The Seahawks are undergoing a transformation in their linebacker positions, with both of their starting linebackers from 2023, Bobby Wagner and Jordyn Brooks, moving on to new teams. Baker, with his impressive track record of 587 tackles, five interceptions, 22.5 sacks, and 31 tackles for loss across 94 games and 82 starts, is set to bring a new dynamic to the team. Notably, Baker has also achieved 21 pass breakups and six forced fumbles during his time in the league.

One of Baker’s standout moments came when he sacked Patrick Mahomes for a 30-yard loss, forcing the Chiefs into a 4th and 42 situation, a play that still resonates with fans. Throughout his career, Baker has hit several career highs, including 126 tackles in 2019, seven sacks and seven tackles for loss in 2020, and two interceptions in 2023. Despite facing injuries, including a knee issue last year and a recent wrist surgery, Baker’s resilience and skill have made him a valuable addition to the Seahawks.

Baker and Dodson are now poised to lead the linebacker group under the guidance of new head coach Mike Macdonald. Macdonald, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, is tasked with revitalizing a Seahawks defense that struggled in 2023. The team aims to improve upon their rankings, which saw them at 30th in yards allowed, 21st in passing yards allowed, 31st in rushing yards allowed, and 25th in points allowed. With these strategic additions and leadership, the Seahawks are looking to turn a new leaf in their defensive strategy.
