The moment that echoed across the globe wasn’t as exaggerated as it sounds, especially considering the Big Ten Women’s Tournament felt like a home match for the Iowa Hawkeyes. They dubbed it “Carver-Hawkeye North.”
Gabbie Marshall delivered the season’s most remarkable defensive move for the Hawkeyes. She fully blocked a three-point shot from Nebraska as they were closing in on Iowa. Not only did Marshall send the ball flying in the opposite direction, but she also swiftly grabbed it and smartly called for a timeout. This move secured the ball for the Hawkeyes.
The internet can’t stop watching this incredible moment. Marshall’s action has now been celebrated as CBS Sports’ top defensive play of the week.
CBS Sports highlighted this as the “Stop of the week: Gabbie Marshall, Iowa.” The Hawkeyes narrowly avoided an upset in the Big Ten championship game against Nebraska. With the game stretching into overtime, Iowa was slightly ahead, 91-87, with just 30 seconds left. Nebraska was pushing hard, but Marshall’s critical block stopped their momentum dead, preventing a possible comeback.
But Marshall’s contributions weren’t limited to defense. She’s been a dynamo for the Hawkeyes throughout March, especially with her three-point shooting.
Since the start of March, Marshall has hit 44% of her three-point attempts, making 11 out of 25 shots. Additionally, she’s contributed seven steals and 10 assists during this period.
She’s doing everything right to pull the team together at the crucial moment. With the NCAA Tournament drawing near, Marshall’s ability to sink three-pointers will be vital.
As the Hawkeyes prepare for the first round, it’s almost certain that Marshall will have the chance to perfect her shot at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa is poised to secure a No. 1 seed.
