In the heart of Suamico, Wisconsin, an escalating issue is coming to light: a significant number of children lack a proper bed for a good night’s sleep. This concern was initially brought to public attention by Action 2 News, highlighting the efforts of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Since its inception in De Pere in 2021, this volunteer-driven organization has been tirelessly working to ensure that children in need receive the comfort and security of their own beds, now crafting an unprecedented number of sleeping solutions.
This year, Sleep in Heavenly Peace is on track to construct over 700 beds, a substantial increase from the 265 beds built in its inaugural year. Initially without a dedicated workspace, the organization now operates from a garage unit in Suamico, where volunteers gather to bring these beds to life. Dan Vermeulen, co-president, emphasizes that the process is inclusive and educational, offering anyone willing to help a chance to learn essential skills, such as sanding.
However, the cost of providing this essential service is on the rise. Building a single bed now requires an investment of $250, up from previous costs, with the price of a mattress alone jumping from $45 to $80, not to mention the surging prices of lumber. Despite these financial challenges, the need for beds continues to grow, shedding light on a widespread yet underrecognized issue known as ‘bedlessness’. This term, coined by the organization, describes the alarming reality that between two to three percent of children in any given community are sleeping on the floor. In Brown County alone, this translates to an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 children, with Sleep in Heavenly Peace having provided beds to 1,528 of them so far.
Those interested in supporting this cause, either through volunteering or donations, are encouraged to visit the Sleep in Heavenly Peace website. The site also offers information for families seeking a bed for their child. Looking ahead, Vermeulen envisions further expansion for the organization, including the establishment of satellite locations in areas such as Denmark or Luxemburg. These hubs would have the capacity to store and deliver beds to children in need, ensuring that the call for comfort and security is answered promptly.
Through the concerted efforts of volunteers and the community, Sleep in Heavenly Peace continues to make significant strides in combating bedlessness, one bed at a time, ensuring that no child has to endure the discomfort and indignity of sleeping on the floor.
