Wonder Woman Director Revives Rogue Squadron Movie, Steering It Back on Course

The eagerly anticipated Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie is revving up once again.

After a period of uncertainty, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron has received an encouraging update from director Patty Jenkins. Speaking on the TCM Podcast, as reported by Collider, the director behind Wonder Woman announced her return to penning the script for the much-awaited film. This news arrives over three years following the initial announcement of Jenkins’ involvement as the director, a tenure that saw the project being temporarily removed from the 2022 release schedule. Jenkins also mentioned her comeback to the project was spurred by the cancellation of her planned sequel to Wonder Woman 1984, a process further complicated by the WGA strike in 2023.

Jenkins shared insights into her journey with Star Wars, initially leaving to work on Wonder Woman 3 with the hope of returning. “When that opportunity dissolved, Lucasfilm and I realized we needed to finalize our agreement,” she stated. The completion of their deal coincided with the onset of the strike, leaving Jenkins with a screenplay to deliver for Star Wars, the future of which remains uncertain.

Despite the setbacks, Jenkins remains committed to the Rogue Squadron screenplay, albeit with caution. Her departure from the project for another film that was eventually shelved has made her wary. However, she acknowledges that Rogue Squadron is among several Star Wars films in active development at Lucasfilm, suggesting it may not be their top priority at the moment. Nevertheless, the fact that Lucasfilm is still interested in her script, without outright cancellation, is a positive sign.

Jenkins expressed the challenges faced by Lucasfilm in deciding which movie to prioritize, given the involvement of other directors. “I’m back on doing Rogue Squadron, and we’ll see what happens. We need to develop it to a point where we’re both extremely satisfied,” she remarked.

Patty Jenkins Would Fulfill a Dream by Directing Rogue Squadron

Jenkins also touched on her personal aspirations, highlighting her lifelong dream to direct a fighter pilot movie. “The beauty and emotion of Star Wars, and its significance, especially in today’s context, is profound. It’s about creating metaphors, and in that sense, I’ve always been drawn to making a fighter pilot movie,” she explained.

As of now, no release date has been announced for Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.
