Robert Sheehan, a BAFTA-nominated actor from Ireland known for his role in “The Umbrella Academy,” is set to headline a stage version of the 1987 cult classic “Withnail and I.” This adaptation will take place at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He will be joined by actors Adonis Siddique and Malcolm Sinclair.
The play, directed by Sean Foley, a recipient of two Olivier Awards and the Artistic Director of Birmingham Rep, is scheduled to premiere at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Audiences can look forward to performances from May 3 until May 25, 2024. Alice Power is in charge of the show’s design.
Bruce Robinson, the mind behind the original film “Withnail and I,” which was adapted from his unpublished novel, has also penned this stage adaptation. The film was a product of Handmade Films and featured Richard E Grant, Paul McGann, and Richard Griffiths in leading roles. In this theatrical rendition, Sheehan will portray Withnail, Siddique will take on the role of Marwood, and Sinclair will embody Uncle Monty.
Since making his acting debut in Aisling Walsh’s “Song For A Raggy Boy,” Sheehan has built an impressive resume. His filmography includes titles like “Season of the Witch,” “Cherrybomb,” “Killing Bono,” “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” “The Road Within,” and the widely acclaimed Netflix series “Umbrella Academy.” His stage presence is equally notable, with performances in “The Playboy of the Western World” at the Old Vic, “Richard III” in “The Wars of the Roses” at the Rose Theatre, and “Endgame” at the Gate Theatre Dublin.
Adonis Siddique’s theatrical contributions include roles in “The Crown Jewels” in the West End, “East Is East” (a collaboration between Birmingham Rep and the National Theatre), “The Picture Of Dorian Gray” at the Pleasance Theatre in London, “The History Boys,” and “Mismatched,” a production by Sky Comedy and Birmingham Rep. His work extends to film and television, with appearances in “Newark Newark,” “Tin Star,” “Tyrant,” “Beyond Reasonable Doubt” on CNN, and the feature film “Me Myself and D.”
Malcolm Sinclair is currently gracing the stage at the National Theatre in “Dear Octopus” alongside Lindsay Duncan. His extensive theatre experience includes performances in “The Inquiry” at Chichester Festival Theatre, “My Fair Lady” in the West End, “The Light in the Piazza” both internationally and at the Royal Festival Hall, “An Enemy of the People” at Nottingham Playhouse, and “This House” at Chichester Festival Theatre and the Garrick Theatre. Sinclair’s screen roles include “Drowning,” “The Man Who Knew Infinity,” “Survivor,” and “A Belfast Story.”
