Miami Gardens Woman Charged with Assaulting Grandmother Over iPad Dispute

In Miami Gardens, Florida, a distressing incident unfolded last Friday when a 25-year-old woman was apprehended by police for assaulting her grandmother amidst a family dispute over a missing iPad.

The confrontation erupted around 10:45 p.m. at a residence located on the 2700 block of Northwest 208th Terrace, according to the Miami Gardens Police Department. Officers arrived on the scene following reports of a domestic disturbance.

The conflict began when Sonya Amanda Walker visited the home of Cherrin Nelson to spend time with her grandchild, who was staying there temporarily. During her visit, Walker accused Nelson’s son of taking her son’s iPad, leading to a heated argument between Walker and Nelson.

The situation escalated when Nelson reportedly attacked Walker, jumping on her and initiating a chokehold. The altercation was eventually broken up by Nelson’s son.

Further complicating the matter, Sontravia Renae Nelson, a 25-year-old resident of North Miami and the granddaughter of Cherrin Nelson, joined the fray. She allegedly punched her grandmother multiple times in the head, causing her to fall. Sontravia Nelson didn’t stop there; she continued to kick Cherrin Nelson in the head repeatedly, resulting in several contusions.

Despite the severity of the attack, the victim remained conscious and opted not to receive medical treatment from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, as per the police report.

Sontravia Nelson refuted claims of kicking or punching the victim. Nonetheless, she was arrested and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The report further noted that Cherrin Nelson was also detained, facing a charge of battery by strangulation.

Jail records indicate that Sontravia Nelson is charged with one count of battery on a person over the age of 65. As of Monday afternoon, neither Cherrin Nelson nor Sontravia Nelson were listed in the Miami-Dade Correction’s inmate search database.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential for domestic disputes to escalate into violence, highlighting the importance of addressing conflicts with communication and mediation rather than physical aggression.
