Katie Couric has just shared the most heartwarming news of her career: she has become a grandmother. In a touching Instagram post on Sunday, the renowned television journalist announced that her daughter Ellie welcomed a baby boy into the world on Saturday. This joyous event marks the arrival of Couric’s very first grandchild.
“John Albert Dobrosky arrived on his expected due date, Saturday, March 23rd at 8:23 am, weighing just under seven pounds,” Couric shared, alongside a photograph of Ellie and her son-in-law, Mark Dobrosky. “Both parents are ecstatic, and I am absolutely delighted to welcome my first grandchild.”
In her post, Couric also included additional photographs, featuring a close-up of baby John as he slept, and images of her daughter Caroline and her husband, John Molner, celebrating the new arrival. “We feel incredibly blessed. 💙🥰🍼👶🏻💙,” she added.
The former host of the “Today” show revealed that her grandson would be nicknamed “Jay” in a touching tribute to Couric’s late husband, Jay Monahan, who passed away from colon cancer in 1998. “He will be affectionately known as Jay, in honor of his maternal grandfather,” Couric noted.
In a recent interview with USA TODAY, Couric opened up about her excitement at becoming a grandmother for the first time. She expressed her eagerness to embrace her new role as a loving, indulgent grandma, looking forward to “doing the fun stuff,” such as allowing ice cream for breakfast, she said humorously.
Couric also reflected on this significant milestone, acknowledging it as a poignant reminder of her age. “It reminds me that, oh, holy barnyard epithet – I’m old enough to be a grandmother,” she admitted. “But I suspect I’ll quickly move past that. Everyone says there’s an indescribable love that envelops you when you meet your first grandchild. And witnessing your own child have a baby is nothing short of miraculous.”
On a more somber note, Couric mentioned that the birth of her grandson also brought memories of her late husband, Molner. “I often think of him, but particularly during significant moments in our daughters’ lives – whether it’s a college graduation, a job promotion, or winning an award. And now, with our eldest daughter Ellie having a baby, it’s a stark reminder of all the milestones he’s missed.”
This joyful announcement and Couric’s reflections offer a glimpse into the personal milestones and memories that shape our lives, reminding us of the enduring bonds of family and love.
