Browns Secure Key Acquisition: Former Ravens QB Tyler Huntley Joins Cleveland in 2024 NFL Free Agency

The Cleveland Browns have once again tapped into the talent pool of the Baltimore Ravens by signing Tyler Huntley, a move reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer. This decision marks another instance where the Browns have shown interest in former Ravens quarterbacks, following a pattern of strategic acquisitions.

Tyler Huntley, who has been the main backup to Lamar Jackson over the past three seasons, found himself stepping into the spotlight on several occasions. He started four games each in the 2021 and 2022 seasons and even earned a spot as a Pro Bowl replacement in 2022. Despite mixed results in his performances, Huntley’s time on the field showcased his capabilities. Over 20 games, including nine starts, he achieved a 64.6% completion rate, threw 8 touchdowns, and ran for 509 yards, adding another dimension to his game with his mobility.

At 26 years old, the undrafted free agent from Utah is set to join the Browns as a backup to Deshaun Watson. Watson’s previous season was cut short due to injury, and his return to peak performance remains uncertain following a suspension related to violations of the NFL’s personal-conduct policy. The Browns have also signed Jameis Winston and drafted Dorian Thompson-Robinson, indicating a robust quarterback room that raises questions about Watson’s readiness for the upcoming season.

This strategy of bringing in former Ravens quarterbacks isn’t new for the Browns. Last season, they signed Joe Flacco, who not only secured the starting position but also played a pivotal role in the team’s playoff run, earning him the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year award. This pattern of acquisitions highlights the Browns’ approach to building a competitive team by leveraging experienced players from within their division.
