California Man Fatally Attacked by Mountain Lion, Brother Injured

In a tragic incident in a secluded area of Northern California, west of Lake Tahoe, a mountain lion attack resulted in the death of one man and left another injured. This marks the state’s first fatal encounter with a mountain lion in two decades.

The distressing event unfolded on a Saturday afternoon when an 18-year-old man made an urgent 911 call. He reported that he and his brother had been assaulted by a mountain lion in Georgetown, a quaint town situated north of Placerville, California. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office relayed this information.

The caller, who managed to reach out to the authorities, suffered severe facial injuries during the ordeal. He became separated from his brother amidst the chaos. Upon receiving immediate medical attention, he was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

In a desperate search for the other victim, sheriff’s deputies and paramedics encountered a grim scene: a mountain lion crouched beside a man lying on the ground. The deputies took action, firing shots to drive the mountain lion away and provide aid to the stricken man. Tragically, the 21-year-old man had already succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, along with the El Dorado County Trapper, were dispatched to the area. They successfully located and euthanized the mountain lion, as confirmed in a news release.

**Historical Context of Fatal Mountain Lion Attacks**

Prior to this unfortunate event, California had witnessed only three fatal mountain lion attacks on humans since 1994, as per the California Department of Fish and Wildlife records. The most recent of these occurred in 2004 at Whiting Ranch Regional Park in Orange County, claiming the life of a 35-year-old man. Additionally, a fatal attack in El Dorado County back in 1994 resulted in the death of a 40-year-old woman at Auburn State Recreation Area.

Despite these incidents, authorities emphasize that mountain lion attacks on humans are exceedingly rare, with most encounters not resulting in fatal outcomes.

**A Recent Encounter: The Attack on a Young Boy**

In a separate incident in 2023, a mountain lion attacked a 5-year-old boy while he was out walking with his mother and grandparents near Half Moon Bay, California. The boy, Jack Trexler, was pinned to the ground by the mountain lion before his mother intervened, causing the animal to release him and flee. The attack took place close to the family’s farm in Half Moon Bay.

Jack was promptly treated at a hospital for cuts, scratches, and a fracture near his eye, but was fortunately able to return home.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife and the importance of exercising caution in their habitats.
