In the early hours of Friday morning, a tragic incident unfolded on Portland’s Eastbank Esplanade, resulting in the death of a man following an assault. The Portland Police Bureau swiftly responded, apprehending the suspect involved in this grievous act.
The incident was reported just before 4:30 a.m. on Southeast Madison Street, a location proximate to Portland Fire and Rescue Station 21. Upon their arrival, law enforcement officers discovered that firefighters, alongside other civilians, had already intervened in the ongoing assault. The victim, a man whose identity remains undisclosed, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Authorities have since taken the suspect, whose identity has yet to be revealed, into custody following a hospital visit. The police have confirmed that they are not in pursuit of any additional suspects related to this case.
The investigation into this fatal assault is currently being led by the Portland Police Homicide Unit. As a result, the multi-use path on the esplanade will be temporarily inaccessible, although this will not affect vehicular traffic.
