Gov. Healey Pledges Massachusetts’ Support to Baltimore Following Bridge Collapse

Following the tragic collapse of a bridge in Baltimore and the ensuing urgent search for survivors on Tuesday morning, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has publicly offered state resources to aid in the recovery efforts.

Governor Healey announced on social media shortly after 9 a.m. that she had reached out to Maryland Governor Wes Moore, expressing Massachusetts’ readiness to assist in any possible way. “I’m keeping all those affected by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in my thoughts as rescue efforts continue,” she stated.

In light of Healey’s announcement, several individuals highlighted the deteriorating condition of Massachusetts’ own infrastructure, particularly the two bridges connecting the mainland to Cape Cod.

One social media user responded to Governor Healey, predicting, “The Sagamore and Bourne bridge collapse will be much worse!” These bridges, under federal ownership, have faced challenges securing dedicated funding from federal legislators, despite being classified as “functionally obsolete.”

It’s important to note that the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge was not due to structural failure but occurred when a cargo ship struck one of its supports early on Tuesday morning. By 7 a.m., rescue operations had successfully saved two individuals, with efforts ongoing to locate at least seven others in the water.
