Brooklyn Man Arrested for the Murder of Franklin, NJ Resident

Authorities recently apprehended the second individual accused of the heinous act of taking a Franklin man’s life and then transporting his remains to Brooklyn.

Daniel Matthews, a 44-year-old resident of Brooklyn, found himself under arrest on March 12 in Philadelphia, thanks to the efforts of the local police force, as announced by Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald.

Before Matthews’ capture, Andrew Mumby, aged 47 and hailing from New Brunswick, had already been detained in connection with the case.

The investigation was set into motion on the evening of December 30, following a report of a missing person filed by a family member concerned about Artis Young, 46, who had been unaccounted for since the day before. It was revealed through police work that Young had plans to meet with Matthews in the township.

In a shocking development, an unidentified man’s body was discovered in Brooklyn in the early hours of December 30. This individual was later confirmed to be Young by New York authorities.

Upon receiving this identification on January 3, the Franklin police were informed, and the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office declared Young’s death a homicide.

The investigation, spearheaded by Franklin detectives and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes and Crime Scene Investigation units, pointed to Mumby and Matthews as the prime suspects. It was determined that after Young’s murder, the duo transported his body to Brooklyn, as stated by McDonald.

Mumby was taken into custody on February 7 in New Brunswick without any complications. Both men face charges including murder, disturbing or desecrating human remains, conspiracy to disturb or desecrate human remains, hindering prosecution, and aiding in the hindrance of another’s prosecution. They are currently held in the Somerset County Jail.

The authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit at 908-231-7100 or the Franklin Township Police Department at 732-873-5533. Information can also be submitted through the STOPit app.
